Upgrades at our sanctuary in Spain

Our recent improvements to our sanctuary

Over the past few months, our dedicated team has been hard at work, carefully crafting an even more inviting and enriching environment for our cherished residents. Through enhanced paddock distribution, the addition of trees, shaded areas, and the installation of durable metal fencing, we have transformed the sanctuary into a haven that truly exemplifies our commitment to the best welfare standards and happiness of the donkeys in our care.

Enhanced paddock distribution

At El Refugio del Burrito, we understand the importance of providing ample space for our donkeys to roam, graze, and socialise. To ensure an optimal living environment, we have implemented a refined paddock distribution system. By reorganizing the spaces, we have created larger, more interconnected paddocks that allow our donkeys to move freely and engage in natural herd dynamics. This expansion has not only improved their physical wellbeing but has also contributed to their overall mental stimulation and happiness.

Many more trees and shaded spaces

Recognising the significance of shade and the positive impact of natural elements on our donkeys’ lives, we have embarked on an ambitious tree-planting project. A variety of native trees have been carefully selected and planted strategically across the sanctuary, providing not only shade but also an aesthetic enhancement to the landscape. These leafy havens offer our donkeys respite from the summer heat, creating comfortable and cool areas where they can relax, graze, and engage in social interactions. The presence of these shaded spaces contributes to the overall wellbeing of our beloved donkeys, ensuring they can enjoy a summer filled with comfort and contentment.

Transitioning to metal fencing

In our continuous pursuit of improving safety and security for our residents, we have replaced the existing wooden fences with sturdy metal fencing. This upgrade enhances the overall integrity of the sanctuary’s enclosures, ensuring that our donkeys are protected while maintaining a clear view of their surroundings. Metal fencing provides greater durability, longevity, and ease of maintenance, enabling us to focus our efforts on what matters most – the wellbeing of our precious donkeys.

Thorough cleaning and disinfection of the sheds

Another task we carried out at the Doña Rosa Shelter in Badajoz was the disinfection and cleaning of all our sheds. The design of this large, 42-hectare sanctuary includes vast meadows with central sheds serving as stables. The animals are free to roam outside or inside.

This spring, we enlisted the help of a company specializing in this type of work to clean and disinfect the ceilings and walls, leaving the sheds looking like new.

Our commitment to providing a sanctuary that embraces the natural needs and desires of our donkeys is unwavering. Through enhanced paddock distribution, the addition of lush greenery and shaded spaces, and the implementation of durable metal fencing, we have created a haven where our beloved residents can thrive, grow, and live their lives to the fullest.
