How we aim to make a better world for donkeys
Our mission and vision drive us to make meaningful impacts every day, transforming lives by delivering expert care.
At El Refugio del Burrito, our goal is to improve the welfare of all donkeys through expert care in our sanctuaries, the dissemination of clinical knowledge to veterinarians, and the enhancement of legislation that protects them.
In order to achieve these objectives, we have identified the following key activities:
Provision of donkey care
To provide expert and individual care to every resident donkey within the sanctuary, through the provision of highly qualified motivated staff and optimum facilities to cater for the needs of our donkey population.
Donkey welfare support
To provide a network of skilled Donkey Welfare Advisers across the country who follow up complaints by the public of mistreatment to donkeys and who monitor and develop foster home placements.
Training, education and awareness
To promote donkey welfare practices through resources, courses, publication or whatever means appropriate.
Our facilities
Our headquarters and sanctuary are based at Fuente de Piedra, Malaga (Spain), where we take care of over 60 donkeys. Our second sanctuary is in Bodonal de la Sierra, Badajoz (Spain) and is capable of caring for up to 150 donkeys.

The breadth and depth of our work mean that no one in the world knows more about donkeys. We also know that our passion for donkey welfare is shared by many others. It is a privilege that the public, our team, partners, and supporters trust us to make ethical decisions for donkeys.
